Germany, France to Discuss Ukrainian Peace Process at G20 Summit - Merkel

The G20 Summit in the Chinese city of Hangzhou is scheduled for September 4-5.

"We had the opportunity to discuss the upcoming G20 meeting in Hangzhou…

Of course, we will use the meeting for bilateral and trilateral talks to discuss issues that are concerning to us, such as migration policy with the Egyptian President, for example, as well as areas where there is insufficient progress for now, namely the topic of Ukraine and Russia, the implementation of the Minsk accords," Merkel said, as quoted in a transcript published by the chancellor's office.

In April 2014, Kiev authorities launched a military operation to suppress independence militias in the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region. In February 2015, the two sides reached a ceasefire deal after talks brokered by the leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine – the so-called Normandy Format — in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.

Key points of the Minsk agreements include a ceasefire, heavy weapons withdrawal from the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, constitutional reforms, including a decentralization of power in the country, and granting a special status to the Donbas region.
